As Mr. Scott loped off, Slager drew his service weapon and fired 8 quick successive shots at the fleeing man. Scott fell to the ground after the 8th shot. He was hit four times in the back and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police finally released the dash cam video from Slager’s patrol unit on Thursday. The camera was rolling when Slager pulled over Scott’s Mercedes Benz because of a broken tail light.
During the routine traffic stop Slager can be heard in the video asking Mr. Scott for his driver’s license and insurance.
Mr. Scott is heard telling the officer he didn’t have his license or insurance card because the Mercedes was not his.
Scott told Slager he was in the process of purchasing the car.
Slager is seen returning to the police cruiser, probably to run a check on the car’s tag.
At some point the Mercedes driver’s side door opens and Mr. Scott steps out of the car with his hands raised in the air. Slager orders him to get back into the car, and Mr. Scott complies.
But moments later, the driver’s side door opens again and Mr. Scott jumps out of the car and takes off running.
Slager pursues Mr. Scott, yelling for him to stop.
A passenger in Mr. Scott’s car was later questioned by officers at the scene.
